January, 2020: The SEC and “Accredited Investors”

Zachary Kelman shares his thoughts on December's SEC vote on publishing a proposal to update the definition of "Accredited Investors."

In December, three out of five SEC Commissioners voted to publish a proposal for updating the definition of “accredited investors,” which is a distinct category of individuals and institutions that, so long as certain requirements are met, may participate in private financial markets.

According to a press release published by the SEC, “the proposed amendments would allow more investors to participate in private offerings … and would also expand the list of entities that may qualify as accredited investors,” if enacted.

In CoinDesk’s article, Zachary discussed his views on the proposed amendment, expressing that the proposed amendment did not take into consideration the historical context of the term “accredited investor.”
